hand surgery

Hand surgery has traditionally been performed by orthopedic surgeons, plastic surgeons and general surgeons. Some surgeons restrict their practice by area such as below the wrist or excluded specific categories such as congenital hand problems. For plastic surgeons hand surgery falls within the realm of reconstructive surgery and covers surgery for injuries or trauma, congenital deformities and acquired problems such as arthritis, nerve compression (carpal tunnel) etc.

A more complete listing of problems addressed by hand surgeons would be:
    Injury (acute or repetitive trauma)
  • Tendon lacerations - cut tendons
  • Hand bone fractures - broken hand
  • Nail bed injuries - cut nail
  • Nerve injuries - cut nerve
  • Finger tip amputations
    Acquired
  • Ganglion cyst
  • Arthritis
  • Tendonitis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Cubital tunnel syndrome
  • Hand infections
  • Trigger finger
    Congenital
  • Constriction bands
  • Syndactyly
  • Macrodactyly
  • Extra fingers

Not all of these issues require surgery or at least not initially. Infections are treated with antibiotics and surgery is only required in specific cases such as if an abscess is present. Tendonitis is usually treated first with injections of anti-inflammatory agents.
